The sunlight streamed through
the slit in your curtain
and I was instantly awake
I knew you’d sleep in
so I tried not to wake you
as I pressed my lips
to your skin
Your breathing changed slightly
but your eyes stayed closed
I knew I’d stare at you all morning
so I got up
and slipped onto your balcony.
The warmth of the sunrise
was a perfect continuation
of the night we’d spent
entangled in each other
speaking softly
of our pasts
of how we ended up
here
with each other
so I sat staring at a mountain
instead of your face
just to distract myself temporarily
from the beauty I now
seem to know best.
